About the Camp
We're a surf camp composed by a team that is passionate about surf who has curated a surf experience in the best beach destinations both in Mexico and other countries, both individually and in groups.
Our Story
The origins of our story start with the connection Marisa's had with the ocean since she was a girl. Moving through Mexican sea towns throughout her childhood, she stayed close to the ocean and a lot of water related activities. It was as an adult that she first connected with surfing and she stumbled upon a newfound freedom and sense of empowerment that she had never felt before. While exploring surf destinations in Oaxaca, she met Juan, who is equally passionate about surfing. Juan had been giving surf lessons for a while when they met and their passion led them to discover yet another thing: that they could use their mutual passion for surf to do good. Marisa came up with the idea of #surfingforgood in Barra de la Cruz and Juan joined right from the very beginning. Together, they are sharing their passion for surf with both people who have never tried surfing before as well as with more experienced surfers. They're also inviting people to help a community in Barra de la Cruz through their surf camp experience.
Why Tecas?
Tecas is a word in zapotec, and the people around Barra de la Cruz, Oaxaca are known as tecos (men) and tecas (women). Given that Marisa wanted to honor the work she has been doing to support indigenous communities since she was young, and because she and Juan both believe are believers in women empowerment, they named the camp in honor of the resilient women of the Barra de la Cruz community, tecas.
